Food Lion in Banner Elk quietly donates thousands of pounds of food each month to Feeding Avery Families. Five days each week, a FAF volunteer (like Larry Zimmer in photo above) picks up surplus food from the meat, deli and bakery departments. So far in 2020, they have averaged more than 2,100 pounds each month!

Items picked up from Food Lion are taken directly to the Feeding Avery Families Distribution Center in Newland. There, most of the items (fresh meat, pastries, deli meat, bread, etc) are frozen to preserve them to give to clients each Friday. Volunteers sort the items and bag them so every client receives a fantastic variety.

Even with food shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, Food Lion continued the donations. Most customers do not realize they are doing this since it happens “behind the scenes.” Please thank manager Andy and his hard working staff.
