IMMEDIATE ACTION
Hurricane Helene hit our region on Friday, September 27, 2024, after Feeding Avery Families had completed the September food distribution and deliveries. Before Hurricane Helene, we served an average of 500 families (1,200 individuals) per month with 600 boxes of food through onsite distribution, deliveries, and mobile distribution.
Since Hurricane Helene, we moved to food distribution and disaster relief. Through October 2024, we’ve distributed 1,550 boxes of food to nearly 1,000 families (3,400 individuals) in addition to supplying local churches, volunteer fire departments, and Emergency Operations Command (EOC) with meat and essentials for cooking meals.
While Avery County will build back stronger, we still need your help. Feeding Avery Families needs your help in three ways:
VOLUNTEER
We need volunteers to work on distribution days and on special occasions to receive donations. Our volunteer hours are posted on our home page. We also send email updates on a weekly basis. Click Here to Sign Up.
DONATE SUPPLIES
We are accepting supplies on a limited basis right now. We post our weekly needs on Facebook and Instagram. While our official supply list may change weekly, we always need the following:
- Rice- bagged or boxed
- Flour, sugar, cooking oil, Crisco
- Milk – refrigerated or shelf stable
- Cheese – sliced or shredded
- Family size meats – refrigerated or frozen
- Sliced bread and sandwich buns
- Condiments – ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, etc.
- Canned Goods
If you would like to ship supplies or bring them directly to Feeding Avery Families, please contact Sally Loftis or Vanessa Phillips at 828-783-8506.
DONATE MONEY
Our food supply chain was majorly disrupted when MANNA Food Bank was destroyed in Hurricane Helene; however, they are operating in a limited capacity. We are establishing temporary supply chains to meet our community needs; however, this work takes time and money.
Donating directly to Feeding Avery Families allows us to move forward as quickly as possible with serving our community. Visit our support page for more information.
