Community Outreach

In addition to weekly food distribution at our center in Newland, Feeding Avery Families provides outreach programs to more fully meet the needs of our neighbors in and around Avery County.

Hispanic Outreach:

  • More than 34 million people in the United States are food insecure.
  • Latinos experience hunger 2.5 times more than non-Hispanic white communities.
  • Nationally, Hispanic children are more than twice as likely to face hunger as white children.
  • In 2021, 18.5% of Hispanic children experienced food insecurity according to Feeding America.
  • That equates to 1 out of 5 Hispanic children not knowing where their next meal may come from.
  • Feeding Avery Families is committed to helping all our neighbors in need.

The MANNA Packs for Kids program:

  • Provides emergency food assistance to public school students throughout Avery County.
  • Feeding Avery Families works closely with MANNA to identify at-risk student populations and provide food.

Mobile Distributions:

  • Many people experiencing hunger live in food deserts, where the nearest grocery store is not easily accessible.
  • Feeding Avery Families is growing their efforts to serve neighbors who lack transportation and cannot pick-up food on-site.

Seasonal Distributions:

  • FAF offers additional food distributions from May through November to serve the needs of agricultural and construction workers during their peak seasons.
